(August 15, 2011) College of Education Dean Deborah Curtis has named Jeffrey Bakken, Special Education department chairperson, as interim associate dean of Research, Graduate Studies and International Education.
Bakken came to Illinois State in 1995 as an assistant professor, and has received numerous accolades for his research work and teaching during his tenure. In 1998, he received both the College of Education Research Initiative Award and the University Research Initiative Award. In 1999, he was promoted to associate professor. As a result of his significant contribution to research in the College, Bakken was awarded the 2000-2001 Outstanding College Researcher Award from the College of Education. To date, he has brought over $1,125,000 of external awards to the College. He also received the College of Education Outstanding College Teacher Award in 2002 and the Outstanding University Teacher Award in 2003. He was promoted to professor in 2004, and served as the Department of Special Education chairperson from 2007 to 2011. Bakken has written more than 100 academic publications, including books, journal articles, chapters, monographs, reports, and proceedings, and has made over 200 presentations at local, state, regional, national, and international levels.
The role of interim associate dean will provide new challenges and opportunities for Bakken, and he looks forward to using his wealth of experience and knowledge to advance research and scholarship in the College of Education.
