The Induction and Mentoring Steering Committee (IMSC) was formed in May 2006. The mission of the committee is to provide advisory leadership as to how Illinois State University can continue to support its graduates in the early years of teaching and assist schools that work and partner with Illinois State University in their support of all beginning teachers. A primary goal of the committee is to promote and develop a comprehensive scheme for supporting Illinois State graduates and all beginning teachers in schools that work and partner with Illinois State.

Since its inception, the IMSC has been quite active. For example, a major conceptual framework white paper has been authored regarding ideas about induction and mentoring for the college for others to view (see below). This major white paper was presented at state and national professional education conferences (2008 and 2009). In 2007, the Fall Conference for Induction and Mentoring was held with over sixty P-20 stakeholders from Illinois attending the conference. The result of this conference was presented as a major evaluation white paper at a national Association for Teacher Educator's conference in 2009. The IMSC has framed an operational action plan for induction and mentoring initiatives as we move forward to provide services in support of our graduates as beginning teachers and the schools who partner and work with us at Illinois State University.

Below you will find representative documents that highlight those efforts. Moreover, in September, 2008, the IMSC began its outreach efforts by meeting with the Normal School District Unit 5 Beginning Teacher Induction Steering Committee. As well, two outreach school induction program efforts, beginning in Fall 2009, on a pilot basis, are being implemented to partner with other Illinois school district officials with Illinois State University.

The committee looks forward to working collaboratively with all interested parties across the Illinois State campus, our partner schools and other schools who work with us in Illinois. Please feel free to contact if you would like to partner with us with regards to induction and mentoring programs.

Realizing the Democratic Ideal Through a Commitment to Induction and Mentoring: An Initial Report from the Induction and Mentoring Steering Committee

This 2007-2008 document presents for discussion among Illinois State University (ISU) faculty, administrators, partner schools, school personnel, and other interested parties the various types of concerns and issues related to how ISU can continue to support our graduates in the early years of teaching and assist schools that partner with ISU in their support of all beginning teachers. Our goal is to promote a comprehensive scheme for supporting ISU graduates and all beginning teachers in schools that work and partner with ISU.

The report is organized into the following:

Introduction (pdf)
Part One: School-Based New Teacher Induction (pdf)
Part Two: Brief Overview of Literature on Support of New Teachers (pdf)
Part Three: Illinois State University (ISU) Support of Beginning Teachers (pdf)
Part Four: Constructs for Supporting New Teachers (pdf)
Part Five: Classification of Areas for Initiative and Services Narrative (pdf)
Part Six: A Potential Model for Curriculum Planning to Support New Educational Personnel (pdf)
Part Seven: Elements of the Support Already in Place (pdf)
Part Eight: Current Status of Development (pdf)

As a result of the 2007 Fall Conference, the steering committee analyzed the data collected from the conference participants to produce a final comprehensive draft of the document:

Overall Needs and Strategies for Induction and Mentoring Across Five Focus Areas:  Mentors, Beginning Teachers, School Districts, School Leaders, and ISU Faculty (pdf)

Further refinements of the above document can be found next:

On May 6, 2008, the steering committee met with Dean Curtis and then produced a final action plan for the next steps for induction and mentoring initiatives at ISU.

One May 12, 2008, the Summary Report of Participant Responses for the 2007 Fall Conference for Induction and Mentoring (pdf) was released to Dean Curtis and the IMSC.

On September 30, 2008, Dean Curtis met with the IMSC and suggested a modified sub-committee structure. One sub-committee will emphasize the university-based teacher education strand for induction and mentoring outreach activities. The other sub-committee will emphasize the PreK-12 school-based strand for induction and mentoring outreach activities. Robert Fisher will serve a conveyor for the two sub-committees.

In October, 2009, an action operational plan was established for induction and mentoring program activities with local schools in the Bloomington-Normal region. During the 2010 Spring semester, for example, a pilot program was completed whereas ISU teacher education faculty worked closely in concert with student and beginning teachers with the Unit 5, Normal School District. In March, 2011, another beginning teacher outreach event was orchestrated, that is, McLean County First Year through Fourth Year Beginning/New Teachers, were invited to meet their fellow beginning teachers, interacting with ISU teacher education faculty/administrators and area school administrators in attendance, at the ISU Alumni Center on March 29, 2011, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. From all accounts, last Spring's McLean County Beginning Teacher Meet and Greet Event was a terrific success which led us to plan for a series of “Meet and Greets” for the 2011-2012 academic year.  We had beginning teachers, school administrators and ISU Faculty/Academic Professionals who attended this event.  We look forward to future enhancements based upon the success of our first "Meet and Greet."

The IMSC is planning series of “Meets and Greets” for the 2011-2012 academic year.  Here are some details to date about those events:

5:45 p.m., Full Group reassembles for Wrap Up of the Session and an Advance Organizer will be shared for Future Events

Future tentative IMSC outreach events for the academic year will include:

  • Something centered around Education Week, November 14, 2011
  • Meet and Greet, January 24, 2012
  • Meet and Greet, April 19, 2012

During the 2012 Fall semester, Professor Jerich shared with Dean Curtis that he would like to end his tenure as chair of the committee and asked her to seek his replacement for committee chair. Dean Curtis announced later that semester that Ms. Kelli Apple and Dr. Nancy Latham would serve as the new co-chairs of the committee.

We welcome your input and feel free to contact us should you desire additional information about the IMSC at Illinois State University.

Respectfully,
Dr. Kenneth Jerich
