Chicago Public School (CPS) paraprofessionals may earn an Elementary Education degree with Bilingual Approval from Illinois State University. The program is designed for people currently working within the public schools. Classes will be offered in the evenings and some weekends during the Fall and Spring semester. During summer months, students will take classes full-time. Upon successful completion of the summer courses, students will receive a stipend.

The program is designed to:

  • prepare bilingual paraprofessionals for certification as elementary/bilingual teachers,
  • help participating bilingual paraprofessionals understand the psychological and sociological setting pertinent to bilingual/bicultural children,
  • develop theoretical competencies in participating bilingual paraprofessionals through specialized elementary/bilingual educational studies,
  • address the shortage of certified bilingual educators, as program participants will commit to work in a high-needs school for three years.

As of May 2009, applications are no longer being accepted for this program.
